MIST certification, explained
Minimum Industry Safety Training — OPITO Standard 5301. The UK offshore oil and gas industry's mandatory safety-awareness qualification for the UK Continental Shelf. Covers major-accident hazards, control of work, and behavioural safety. Pair it with BOSIET and a current OEUK / OGUK medical to mobilise to a UKCS installation.
Where BOSIET teaches you what to do when something goes wrong, MIST teaches you the systems that prevent things going wrong in the first place. The two are pair-required for every UKCS offshore worker. MIST also has the most worker-friendly renewal model of any offshore qualification — a £50 online refresher that can be done at home.
How much does MIST training cost?
Initial classroom MIST training costs about £400–500 at OPITO-approved UK centres. MIST Online renewal is far cheaper at roughly £50 plus VAT, around £60 in total, and is the standard refresher route for workers who already hold a valid or recently expired MIST certificate.
How long does a MIST certificate last?
MIST is valid for four years from completion. You can renew up to three months before expiry and the new certificate runs four years from the old expiry date, not the renewal date, so renewing early never costs you validity. Let it lapse too long and the full course is required.
Can MIST be done online?
Renewal, yes: MIST Online is delivered entirely online and is the normal refresher for experienced offshore workers. The initial course is usually classroom-based, although OPITO has approved some digital-delivery formats at accredited centres. Check that the provider is OPITO-approved before booking either version.

MIST was developed by the UK offshore industry after years of incident-investigation findings showed that most preventable offshore incidents involved breakdowns in safe-system-of-work behaviour — not failures of emergency response, but failures upstream: a missed permit, an improperly isolated piece of equipment, a dropped object from poorly-planned lifting, a fall from height because the harness wasn't used. BOSIET addressed the response side; MIST was designed to address the prevention side.
The course is built around the operational concept of control of work: the system of permits, isolations, risk assessments and authorisations that govern every non-routine task offshore. A worker who has done MIST should be able to read a Permit to Work, recognise when an isolation has been improperly executed, identify a dropped-object hazard above an active work area, and intervene safely when they spot another worker about to do something unsafe.
MIST is delivered under OPITO Standard 5301 at OPITO-approved training centres. The initial course is typically classroom-based and takes one day. The online refresher (Standard 5301 Online) replaces the in-person element for renewal once a worker holds an existing MIST.

Understanding hydrocarbon hazards, gas detection, controlled venting, hot work in hydrocarbon environments.
Working at Height
Fall hazards, harness use, edge protection, fall arrest systems, the OPITO offshore approach to height work.
Manual Handling
Safe lifting techniques, mechanical aid use, kinetic handling principles in confined offshore environments.
Control of Work
Permit to Work systems, isolation procedures, confined space entry, lock-out tag-out — the procedural backbone of offshore safety.
Mechanical Lifting
Crane operations, dropped-object prevention, banksman procedures, lifting plan basics.
Behavioural Safety

Renewal — the online pathway
MIST Online is the standard renewal pathway and one of the cheapest, most-accessible offshore-cert refreshers in the industry. Eligibility:
- Hold a valid current OPITO MIST (Standard 5301) or MIST Further (Standard 5302) certificate, OR
- Hold a valid Vantage POB number with evidence of recent UKCS offshore work
The course is delivered entirely online — typically 4–5 hours of digital content covering the seven modules — and ends with a knowledge-check assessment. On successful completion, OPITO issues the renewed certificate.

MIST can be renewed up to 3 months before the current certificate's expiry. The new certificate runs four years from the previous expiry date, not from the renewal date — so renewing early costs you nothing in certification time. If MIST has fully expired, the online renewal path is no longer available — workers must complete the full initial classroom course again.

How much MIST costs \u2014 the full breakdown
MIST has the widest gap between initial and renewal price of any offshore qualification: roughly a 10\u00d7 difference. That gap is the whole reason the renewal window matters. Prices below are typical UK training-centre rates in 2026 and exclude VAT unless stated; check the centre's current price list before booking.
Initial MIST (OPITO 5301, classroom, 1 day)

Who pays? For workers already employed by an operator or drilling contractor, MIST is normally booked and paid for by the employer as a routine compliance cost, and the online renewal is often pushed out to the worker with a voucher code. For new entrants and agency or contract workers it is usually self-funded, which is why it is worth checking whether a job offer includes training before you book.
Is there a cheaper route? Only the renewal. There is no discounted initial MIST: the classroom day is set by the OPITO standard and every accredited centre charges within the same band. The saving comes from never letting the certificate lapse so you stay on the ~\u00a360 online cycle for the rest of your career.
MIST vs BOSIET \u2014 what's the difference?
The two are constantly confused because every UK offshore worker holds both and they expire on the same four-year cycle. They are not alternatives: BOSIET gets you on the helicopter, MIST lets you work once you land. A worker with BOSIET but no MIST will be turned away at the heliport check-in for a UKCS flight; a worker with MIST but no BOSIET never gets as far as the heliport.

Order to book them in, for a new entrant: OEUK medical first (a failed medical makes the rest pointless), then BOSIET, then MIST. Many Aberdeen centres sell BOSIET + MIST as a four-day package at a small discount.
Who needs MIST
Anyone mobilising to a UK Continental Shelf offshore installation. The requirement applies regardless of role, seniority, or duration of visit.
MIST outside the UK \u2014 do you need it?
Strictly, MIST is a UK Continental Shelf requirement and nothing else. It was written by the UK industry for UK installations and no other regulator mandates it. In practice three groups of non-UK workers still end up needing it:
- Anyone rotating onto a UK installation, even for a single trip \u2014 vessel crews transferring to a platform, specialist vendors, inspectors, auditors. The requirement is per-installation, not per-employer.
- Crews of IOCs and drilling contractors with UK-standard training matrices \u2014 some operators apply their UK matrix fleet-wide, so a rig in West Africa or the Mediterranean can list MIST as mandatory simply because the contractor's HQ policy says so.
- Workers keeping a North Sea option open. MIST is cheap to hold once you have it (\u00a360 every four years), so many Norwegian, Dutch and Danish sector workers keep it current rather than re-do the classroom day when a UK contract comes up.
Regional equivalents that do not substitute for MIST on the UKCS: Norway's GSK (Grunnleggende sikkerhetskurs) covers emergency response and is the BOSIET analogue, not the MIST analogue; the Netherlands and Denmark recognise OPITO BOSIET but have no MIST-equivalent safety-system course; Australia's offshore safety induction is operator-specific. If an operator outside the UK asks for “MIST or equivalent”, ask them which equivalent they mean \u2014 usually the answer is that a current MIST is the easiest way to close the gap.
Where the initial course can be done outside the UK: OPITO-approved MIST centres exist in a handful of hubs with UK-linked workforces (Aberdeen, Newcastle, Teesside and Great Yarmouth in the UK; Den Helder; occasionally the Middle East and Malaysia). The online renewal is location-independent. Use the OPITO centre directory below and filter by Standard 5301.

MIST Online — the digital refresher — is delivered by a small number of OPITO-approved e-learning providers, with Mintra being the longest-established and most widely used.
