Offshore Oil & Gas

Manage your offshore certs
from any rig, anywhere

BOSIET, HUET, Well Control, OGUK Medical β€” offshore workers carry more certifications than almost any other industry. CertVault keeps them all in one verified, shareable place so you're always mobilisation-ready.

Why cert management matters in offshore oil & gas

πŸ“‹

Offshore workers typically carry 6–10 active certifications at any one time, each with different expiry dates, renewal procedures, and regional recognition requirements.

⏱️

Mobilisation windows are tight. An expired cert discovered at the helideck can ground you for weeks β€” losing income, damaging relationships with operators, and delaying critical projects.

🌐

Operating across multiple regions means dealing with overlapping standards β€” OPITO, IWCF, IADC, OGUK, NORSOK β€” and proving compliance to every new operator and crewing agent.

Required certifications

Core offshore oil & gas certifications

Requirements vary by role, region, and operator. These are the most commonly required certifications across the global offshore sector.

🚁

BOSIET / T-BOSIET

Basic Offshore Safety Induction & Emergency Training. Covers helicopter escape, firefighting, sea survival, and first aid.

⏳ 4 years (renew with FOET)

Global β€” OPITO standard recognised by operators worldwide. T-BOSIET for tropical climates (West Africa, SE Asia, Middle East).

🌊

HUET

Helicopter Underwater Escape Training. Mandatory for personnel travelling by helicopter to offshore installations.

⏳ 4 years (included in BOSIET/FOET)

Global β€” required wherever helicopter transfer is used to reach offshore installations.

βš—οΈ

H2S Safety Training

Hydrogen sulphide gas awareness and response training. Required for personnel working in areas where H2S may be present.

⏳ 3 years (varies by operator)

Global β€” H2S Alive widely used in Canada; OPITO H2S standard used internationally.

πŸ₯

Offshore Medical

Fitness-to-work medical examination confirming you are physically fit for offshore operations.

⏳ 2 years (1 year for over 40 in some regions)

OGUK/OEUK Medical (UK North Sea), NORSOK (Norway), various national equivalents worldwide.

πŸ›’οΈ

IWCF / IADC Well Control

Well control certification for drilling personnel. Covers pressure control, well kicks, and blowout prevention.

⏳ 2 years

IWCF prevalent in North Sea, Middle East, Asia-Pacific. IADC WellCAP more common in the Americas. Many operators accept both.

🦺

MIST

Minimum Industry Safety Training. Industry-standard safety awareness training covering risk management and safe working practices.

⏳ No fixed expiry (good practice to refresh regularly)

Primarily UK Continental Shelf (UKCS). Equivalent standards apply in other regions.

βš“

STCW

Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping. Required for marine crew on offshore vessels, FPSOs, and drill ships.

⏳ 5 years (revalidation required)

Global β€” IMO convention, recognised in all flag states.

πŸ”„

FOET

Further Offshore Emergency Training. The renewal course for BOSIET, maintaining offshore emergency competence.

⏳ 4 years

Global β€” OPITO standard. Required once initial BOSIET has expired.

Certification requirements change. Always verify with your operator, contractor, or regional authority.

Frequently asked questions

What certifications are required to work offshore in oil and gas?↓
Core requirements vary by region but typically include: BOSIET or T-BOSIET (emergency training), HUET (helicopter underwater escape), H2S safety training, and a valid offshore medical. Additional certs depend on your role β€” drillers and well operators need IWCF or IADC Well Control, while deck and marine crew need STCW. UK North Sea work typically requires MIST. Your specific operator or contractor may have additional requirements.
How long does BOSIET last?↓
BOSIET is valid for 4 years. After expiry you must complete FOET (Further Offshore Emergency Training) to renew. T-BOSIET is the tropical variant required for warmer-climate operations (West Africa, Southeast Asia, Middle East). Both are OPITO-approved qualifications recognised globally.
What is the difference between IWCF and IADC well control?↓
Both IWCF (International Well Control Forum) and IADC (International Association of Drilling Contractors) are globally recognised well control certifications. IWCF is more widely required in the North Sea, Middle East, and Asia-Pacific. IADC WellCAP is more common in the Americas. Some operators accept either; check your specific operator or region's requirements.
Do offshore certifications expire at different times?↓
Yes β€” and managing multiple expiry dates is one of the biggest challenges for offshore workers. BOSIET/FOET is 4 years, offshore medicals are typically 2 years (varies by issuing body and age), H2S training is usually 3 years, and IWCF/IADC is 2 years. Keeping track of all these across different documents is exactly what CertVault is built for.
Can I use CertVault to share my offshore certs with operators and contractors?↓
Yes. Every CertVault worker profile has a shareable public link. You can send it to any operator, contractor, or crewing agent β€” they can see all your verified, scanned documents without needing a CertVault account. It's free for workers.
