We are seeking an experienced Estimating Subject Matter Expert (SME) to join our team in Henderson, Western Australia. This is a pivotal position responsible for leading the development of high-quality cost estimates, providing commercial insight, and supporting strategic bid activities across complex projects and tender opportunities. As the organisation's estimating authority, you will partner closely with Operations, Engineering, Commercial, Finance, Procurement, and Legal teams to deliver accurate, transparent, and competitive estimates that support informed business decisions and sustainable growth. About the Role The Estimating SME will be accountable for the end-to-end development, review, presentation, and approval of project estimates while providing commercial analysis and strategic input throughout the tender lifecycle. You will play a key role in maintaining estimating standards, improving estimating capability across the business, and ensuring estimates are robust, defendable, and aligned with organisational processes and objectives. Key Responsibilities Estimating Leadership Lead the preparation and development of detailed project estimates to required levels of accuracy and detail. Analyse tender documentation, specifications, scopes of work, and project requirements. Develop, document, and manage the Basis of Estimate (BOE) process. Facilitate and chair estimate review sessions and approval workshops. Present estimates and supporting documentation to internal approval committees. Develop estimating strategies and plans for major tender opportunities. Plan, schedule, and lead estimate reviews and bid presentations. Ensure compliance with internal estimating processes, procedures, and governance requirements. Promote the use of standard estimating systems, tools, and methodologies. Proactively manage bid timelines and maintain visibility of progress across stakeholders. Support the ongoing maintenance of estimating databases, productivity benchmarks, escalation indices, and historical cost information. Mentor and develop estimating team capability through coaching, guidance, and technical support. Cost Analysis & Commercial Insight Produce detailed cost analysis and reporting to support business decisions and approval outcomes. Liaise with Engineering, Procurement, Finance, Legal, Tax, Operations, and external suppliers to develop accurate project cost models. Act as the custodian of estimate accuracy, transparency, and cost visibility. Develop and maintain standard labour rates for white-collar and blue-collar resources. Produce location-based resource rate cards and benchmarking data. Conduct detailed productivity, quantitative, and cost analysis. Participate in contract rate reviews and repricing exercises. Develop cost models and pricing structures from customer value propositions. Maintain benchmarking databases and market intelligence to support future opportunities. Commercial Strategy & Bid Support Develop detailed cash flow and financial models. Evaluate supplier and subcontractor quotations. Conduct qualitative and quantitative risk assessments. Perform tender and project SWOT analyses. Develop innovative and commercially competitive pricing strategies. Support tender clarification processes, reviewing operational, legal, and commercial deviations and providing recommendations. Conduct Win/Loss Analyses (WLA) with clients and stakeholders to drive continuous improvement. Lead project handovers for awarded contracts, ensuring smooth transition from bid phase to project execution. Requirements About You To be successful in this role, you will bring: Essential Experience Significant experience in estimating, commercial analysis, quantity surveying, project controls, or cost engineering roles. Proven experience developing and reviewing estimates for complex projects, tenders, or programs. Strong understanding of estimating methodologies, cost modelling, benchmarking, and risk analysis. Demonstrated ability to influence senior stakeholders and present commercially sound recommendations. Experience working within multidisciplinary project environments. Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills. Strong communication, presentation, and stakeholder engagement capabilities. High attention to detail with a commitment to accuracy and quality. Desirable Experience within Defence, Marine, Shipbuilding, Engineering, Construction, Infrastructure, Resources, or Industrial sectors. Knowledge of tendering and contracting frameworks. Experience developing cash flow models and business case analysis. Familiarity with estimating software and project controls systems.
